Chapter Six of The Economy That Keeps Becoming: Complexity Economics, Read as a Living System, for Leaders and Households.

Abstract

Early on Saturday, 1 February 1997, a fire broke out at a plant in Kariya, in Aichi Prefecture, belonging to Aisin Seiki, one of the largest suppliers in the Toyota group. The plant made, among other things, a small brake component called a proportioning valve, known in the industry as a P-valve. It is not a part anyone outside the trade has heard of. It regulates pressure to the rear brakes, it is about the size of a fist, and every Toyota vehicle then in production needed one. Aisin was the sole source. The line that made P-valves was destroyed along with much of the specialised machinery that made them. And Toyota, the company that had given the world just-in-time production, held only a small stock of the part, because holding small stocks was the point of its system. Within days its assembly plants would have nothing to put into the brakes of the cars they were building.
