Chapter Five of The Standing Forest: Doughnut Economics for Leaders and Households, with the Figures You Already Hold.

Abstract

In April 2020, with the streets of Amsterdam emptied by the first lockdown of the pandemic, the city's government presented a document that had been in preparation for more than a year. It was called the Amsterdam City Doughnut. It was, in the words of the Doughnut Economics Action Lab, which helped to make it, "the first public presentation of the City Portrait approach to downscaling the global Doughnut to the city scale". The timing gave the document a public life that its authors had not planned. A city facing the sharpest economic shock in living memory had chosen, as the frame for its recovery, a picture that put human needs and planetary limits on the same page. Reporters around the world wrote about it. The story most of them told was simpler than what had happened, and the simplification matters, because the real story is more useful to a leader than the legend.
