Chapter One of Change That Stays: Why Improvements Fade, and How to Make One Hold.
Abstract
An improvement fades in the months after it is declared done, and those months are a stage of the work with their own measure and their own owner. It is ten past four on the last Friday in November, and the outpatients office on the second floor has emptied early. The clinic manager has the monthly report open on her screen and a mug of tea going cold beside the keyboard. The radiator under the window ticks. She is looking for one line, the rate at which patients miss their appointments, and she finds it on the third page. In March it sat near the top of the chart. By June, after four months of reminder calls, a rebooking desk and a new letter, it had fallen to the bottom third, and the project team had cake in the seminar room and a thank-you email from the director. She scrolls back through the summer. July, a little higher. September, higher again. November is where March was.
