Chapter Two of Change That Stays: Why Improvements Fade, and How to Make One Hold.

Abstract

An organisation that rewards the rescue and cannot see the prevention will quietly spend the time its improvements need to last. It is twenty to seven on a Monday in October, and the stand-up at the packaging plant is held where it is always held, beside the whiteboard at the end of line three, under the strip lights and the noise of the extract fans. Eleven people in hi-vis, two coffees, one clipboard. The plant manager opens with thanks. At ten past three on Saturday morning the filler on line three seized, and the night crew stripped it, found the cracked bearing housing, drove forty minutes to fetch a part from the sister site and had the line running again by half past seven. There is a round of applause, and it is deserved. The shift lead goes slightly red.
