Chapter One of The Channel Keeps It: Reciprocity and the Gift Economy at Work and at Home.

Abstract

Half past five on a Thursday, in an office that is emptying. A woman in finance is still at her desk, finishing a reconciliation that is not hers. Its owner is out with a sick child, and the numbers are due to the controller in the morning. Nobody asked her to do it. Nobody will pay her for the hour. If she does not do it, nothing in her contract will have been broken, and nobody in the firm will be able to say exactly what went wrong when the controller's report arrives a day late with a gap in it. She does it. Three weeks later, when her own father is in hospital, the colleague whose child was sick takes her month-end close without being asked, and does it well. Neither of them writes this down. Neither of them would call it economics.
