Chapter Eleven of The Channel Keeps It: Reciprocity and the Gift Economy at Work and at Home.

Abstract

A Sunday, after lunch. The plates are in the sink and nobody has moved toward them. One person at the table, everyone knows who, will get up in a minute and start washing. Someone else will dry, eventually, after being asked. A teenager will disappear. A grandparent will say she will do it next time, as she said last time. Nobody will mention any of this, and if anybody did, the afternoon would change. The household is the oldest economy there is, and almost nobody in one would call it that. Ecstatic Economics does not need to. Santa Anna's Spiritual Abundance series says it in five words: "Most families operate as gift economies." Parents give to children without an invoice. Partners carry each other through different seasons. Nobody reconciles the account at the end of the month, and a family that started to would be in trouble.
