Chapter Twelve of The Long Clock: Purpose, Patient Capital and the Time a Company Needs.

Abstract

In most kitchens there is a calendar on the fridge, and on it the short clock is written in full. Rent on the first. The card statement on the twelfth. School trip money by Friday. Payday every other Thursday. Nobody has to be reminded of these dates, because each one arrives with a consequence attached. The long clock is not on the calendar. Nobody writes down the year by which the second adult's qualification will be finished, or how many years a parent can go on living alone, or how long the eldest child's confidence in mathematics would take to rebuild if it were lost this year. Those dates exist. They are simply kept somewhere less visible, which means they are kept nowhere. Most chapters of this book have offered a household version of their argument in a few paragraphs. This chapter gives the household the whole room.
