Abstract

Every wisdom tradition that has produced genuine transformation — not merely new ideas, but actual shifts in the quality of human being — has understood that the body is the primary instrument of change. The contemplative traditions of Buddhism, yoga, Sufism, and Christian mysticism all begin with embodied practice: breath, posture, movement, sensation. The martial arts traditions — from Aikido to Tai Chi to the internal arts of Qigong — train the body not as a vehicle for combat but as a vehicle for presence. The somatic psychotherapy traditions pioneered by Wilhelm Reich, Alexander Lowen, Peter Levine, and Pat Ogden have demonstrated that psychological transformation that does not include the body is incomplete at best and illusory at worst.
