Abstract

Let us be direct about something that the corporate world has been remarkably skilled at not discussing: the level of chronic stress carried by senior executives is a public health crisis disguised as professional commitment. The data is unambiguous. Studies consistently show that 60-80% of senior executives report significant, sustained stress. Cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and substance use are dramatically elevated in executive populations. The average CEO works 62.5 hours per week. The average senior vice president reports being "always on" — accessible and cognitively engaged with work matters — for an average of 15.5 waking hours per day. The separation between work and non-work has not merely blurred; for many executives, it has ceased to exist.
