Abstract

There is a moment in the development of every genuine leader when something profound shifts. It is not a dramatic event. It is not a single insight. It is more like a tide change — a gradual but unmistakable shift in the quality of leadership from something you do to something you are . Before this shift, leadership is a set of skills applied to situations. You assess the context, select the appropriate leadership behavior, and execute it. You are decisive when the situation calls for decisiveness. You are empathic when the situation calls for empathy. You are visionary when the situation calls for vision. Your leadership is competent, adaptive, and effective — and it is also, at some level, performed . There is a gap between who you are and what you do as a leader. You bridge that gap with effort, skill, and discipline.
