Mindful Executive Coaching

Abstract

Every leader is, whether they recognize it or not, a coach. Every conversation you have with a direct report, every feedback session, every one-on-one meeting, every strategic dialogue is an opportunity to catalyze another person's development — or to inadvertently constrain it. The quality of your coaching is determined not primarily by the techniques you employ but by the quality of consciousness you bring to the developmental relationship. Conventional executive coaching operates within what we might call the performance paradigm : the goal is to improve the coachee's performance on specific metrics — communication skills, strategic thinking, team management, stakeholder relationships. This is valuable work. But it operates within the existing developmental structure of the coachee — helping them become a better version of who they already are, without catalyzing the deeper structural transformation that would expand who they are capable of becoming.
