Chapter Seven of Mindful Leadership Mastery: Somatic Presence, Field Attunement and Internal Coherence — The Definitive Edition.

Abstract

When Daniel Goleman popularized the concept of emotional intelligence in 1995, he catalyzed a revolution in leadership thinking. For the first time, mainstream business culture acknowledged that cognitive intelligence alone was insufficient for leadership effectiveness — that the capacity to perceive, understand, manage, and use emotions was at least as important as the capacity to analyze data and construct strategies. This was a genuine breakthrough. But three decades later, the way emotional intelligence is typically taught and developed in corporate settings has calcified into something far less revolutionary than Goleman intended. Emotional intelligence training has largely become a cognitive exercise about emotions — learning to identify emotional states in yourself and others, memorizing frameworks for emotional regulation, practicing scripted responses to emotionally charged situations. It is emotional intelligence from the neck up.
