Abstract

You have been trained to decide rationally. Gather data. Analyze options. Evaluate risks and benefits. Choose the option that maximizes expected value. Execute. This is the decision-making model that business schools teach, that management consultants prescribe, and that the corporate world celebrates. And it is not wrong. Rational analysis is an essential and powerful tool for navigating complexity. The problem is that it has been mistaken for the whole of decision-making — the only legitimate and reliable method for choosing among options. Everything else — intuition, gut feeling, somatic signals, field awareness — has been relegated to the category of "soft," "subjective," or "unreliable" — acceptable as anecdote but inadmissible as evidence.
