Chapter Three of Mindful Leadership Mastery: Somatic Presence, Field Attunement and Internal Coherence — The Definitive Edition.

Abstract

The earliest formalized leadership models were trait-based — built on the assumption that leaders are born, not made, and that leadership resides in fixed characteristics like intelligence, charisma, and decisiveness. This gave way to behavioral models that focused on what leaders do rather than who they are — task orientation versus relationship orientation, directive versus participative styles. Behavioral models evolved into situational and contingency theories that recognized the importance of context: the right leadership style depends on the readiness of followers and the demands of the environment. In the 1980s and 1990s, transformational leadership emerged as the dominant paradigm. Pioneered by James MacGregor Burns and developed by Bernard Bass, transformational leadership proposed that the highest form of leadership is one that transforms followers — that inspires them to transcend self-interest in service of a shared vision, that develops their capacities, and that elevates the moral and motivational aspirations of the entire system.
