Abstract

The corporate world loves the word "resilience." It appears in every leadership competency model, every executive development program, every organizational health assessment. Leaders are told to be resilient — to bounce back from setbacks, to persevere through adversity, to maintain effectiveness under pressure. But the conventional understanding of resilience is dangerously incomplete. It defines resilience as the capacity to return to the previous state after disruption — to "bounce back" to the baseline that existed before the challenge. This is mechanical resilience — the resilience of a rubber band that stretches and returns to its original shape. And it is profoundly inadequate for the kind of leadership that our era demands.
